Under 16 Hornets win County Cup in style

Watford Ladies U16 Hornets claimed the Hertfordshire County Cup with a comprehensive 6-1 victory over Harvesters at the County Ground in Letchworth. After falling short at the final hurdle last year, the Golden Girls were determined to make amends this time around and didn't disappoint with a great all round display to lift the cup.

Despite kicking into a deceptive wind in the first half, the Hornets were quick out of the blocks, dominating possession and creating a number of half chances in the
opening 20 minutes. However, determined defending and good goalkeeping kept the Hornets at bay until Linda Afuakwah picked up the ball just inside the Harvesters half, skipped past two defenders before firing into the top corner from 18 yards. 1-0 to Watford and it stayed that way until the half time break.

Although the Hornets had dominated the first half, coach Nick Scott knew that the next goal was going to be crucial, particularly as we knew Harvesters could be
dangerous on the break.

Watford's nerves were calmed in the opening ten minutes of the second period as the ball bobbled about inside the Harvesters penalty area and fell to Julia Draper
whose left foot shot found its way through a crowd of players into the bottom corner. 2-0 Watford and were the Hornets about to erase memories of last years final

However within five minutes, Harvesters got themselves back into the game as their dangerous striker seized upon hesitation in an otherwise impressive Watford defence to pounce and pull a goal back. 2-1, game on......

Fortunately, the goal only served to re-energise the golden girls and the Hornets took the game by the scruff of the neck scoring four goals in the space of 15 minutes. Firstly, a Linda Afuakwah header from an Elles Lord corner reinstated the two goal cushion, before Rebecca Evans poked the ball in from close range to in effect put the game beyond a tiring Harvesters and make it 4-1.

Further goals from Alisha Brayer and Liv Syson rounded off an impressive display from the Hornets, who but for a five minute spell when Harvesters had pulled a goal back, were in total control of the match. Credit to Harvesters who never gave up, however a combination of tiring legs and relentless pressure from Watford meant there was only going to be one winner on the day.

So, the Hornets finally won the County Cup. Well done and great credit to all the girls and coach Nick Scott.

Player of the match was a tough decision as everyone "showed up" and contributed to a great performance. However two players just shaded it - well done to Rebecca Dowdall and Ciara John.
